For pens, markers and other writing instruments, start with the intended user, design, materials and destination market. A product-specific assessment helps identify the relevant mechanical, chemical and labelling requirements.

Understand the Scope of BS 7272

BS 7272 addresses aspects of writing and marking instrument safety: Part 1 covers caps and Part 2 covers end closures, with a focus on reducing the risk of asphyxiation. It should not be presented as a complete chemical-safety certificate or as proof that every pen is suitable for every age group.

Check Other Requirements Separately

Toy classification can bring EN 71 or ASTM F963 into the assessment. Art materials may require ASTM D4236 and related labelling review where applicable. Chemical restrictions, small parts, packaging and age-related warnings should be assessed separately. Do not assume that every writing instrument requires CE marking or that a cap test proves ink safety.

Match the Report to the Item

Ask for the report covering the actual model, cap or closure design and materials. Confirm the test standard, version, laboratory and date. A design change or material substitution may require further review.

How SHINYYOU Supports Buyers

We coordinate product specifications, samples, factory communication and the testing plan for the intended market. Available reports and any additional testing are confirmed for the selected item. Inspection scope and acceptance criteria are agreed before production.
